Nutley, NJ teachers really know how to Up the Bar on sheltered English instruction!

                        Prince of the Frayer

Now this is a story all about how my vocab skills turned upside down
and I'd like to take a minute just sit right there
I'll tell you how I become the prince of a model called Frayer.
In Mrs. Rubino’s class born and raised, on the word wall is where I spent most of my days.
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool and making Frayer Models inside of the school.
When a couple of words that were hard to comprehend
started makin' vocab not my friend.
I got one little “F “ and my mom got scared and said you better start including pictures in your Frayer.
I whistled for a sentence and when it came near, the meaning of the word started to appear.
If anything I could say that now I’m prepared and I thought,
“I won’t forget it yo, thanks to the Frayer!”
I sat down to my test period 7 or 8 and I yelled to the teacher,
"Yo homes, smell ya later." I looked at my assessment.
I was finally there...
to sit on my throne as the Prince of the Frayer!
                                         Remember to KYS
We all came here today to do some professional growing
Little did we know how much we would be knowing…..
And now we are here to explain the knowledge your kids are showing…
I know as a teacher, there is so much to miss
That’s why it’s important to always remember to KYS
K is for knowing and it’s more than just their name
Not everyone is from around here so step up your game.
It’s time for you to learn their ELL typology
Come on people there is tons of technology
Are they newly arrived or been here for awhile?
It’s times for you to go that extra mile
Y is for your, and it’s more than just your class
It doesn’t have to be boring don’t be afraid to add some sass
Get to know their family and the language that they know
Be patient with their learning, they know more than they show
S is for students, the reason why we are here
Don’t be afraid to try new things, there is nothing to fear.
It doesn’t matter if they are in the honeymoon, rejection, or recovery phase
They are all just trying to get through the maze!
Thanks for your time we appreciate your attention
Don’t forget to KYS and praise us in our mentions
                                Top Five Jive
You might want to know a thing or two,
About why we don’t want to talk to you
Let’s take a minute to jive, and talk about the top five
(whisper 5 stages of language acquisition)
One - Taking it all in, there’s a lot to learn from just lookin
Two - I’m listening, It’s all up here (point to head)
But with speaking, I still got some fear
Three - I’m walking, not running, My sentences aren’t stunning
But I’m trying
Four - I’m starting to shine. My words are all mine, and frankly,
I’m feeling quite fine

Five - I’m taking off like a firecracker on the fourth of July
Watch me spread my wings and fly
                             Watch Watch, Student

Watch watch student, Watch watch student.  All right stop.  Collaborate and listen
McNish is back with my brand new invention.  Something grabs a hold of me tightly
Then I talk with my partner daily and nightly.  Will it ever stop?  No No No
Turn up the grades and I'll grow to the extreme,  we rock a book like a vandal
Open up a doc and write a prompt we can handle. Make sure to rush the words through spell check
I'm followin’ the rubric and all the specs.  Deadly, when I read a peers essay
Anything less than the best is not my fortay.  Love it or leave it
You better gain way.  You better hit bull's eye.  And get a straight A
If there was a problem, Yo, we’ll solve it.  Check out the hook while my peers review it
Watch watch student, Watch watch student, Watch watch student, Watch watch student
Now that the classroom is jumping With the wifi kicked in, our fingers are pumping
Quick to the point, to the point no faking, We’re cooking ideas like a pound of bacon
Burning them if they're not quick and well, We go crazy when we hear a hall bell
And a hi hat with a souped up demo, We’re' on a roll when it's time to go solo
Rollin in my 4.0, With my laptop up so my slides can show
The teacher on standby, Waving just to say hi. Do you need help?
No, we’re just givin’ it a try. Kept on pursuing to the next stop
I scored an A and I'm heading to that lunch block. That block was good
Watch watch student. Watch watch student. All right stop
You’ve collaborated and listened A LOT!
                           ELLs on Common Ground
Today we’re gonna teach ya how to Build Background
There are ways we can do this, let's see what we’ve found
The first step can be talking to your kid
We need to know basic stuff like heritage
Maybe asking where they're from or even where they've been
Morocco, Japan or even Sweden
Next step will be is asking what they know,
Asking questions, prior knowledge, or just a survey, yo
This is all part of having simple conversations
Ya know pre assessment is part of education
Connection is key, ya know what I'm sayin'
Gotta link their past for their future fascination
This our plan to build the background
ELL Students 'bout to be on common ground
